Chilliwack is a city in British Columbia that is 100 km away from Vancouver. It has the population of about 80 000 people. Chilliwack has excellent conditions for starting a business or buying residential property. It has successfully developed, flourishing economy with actively growing agricultural, industrial and commercial sectors. Chilliwack has a unique atmosphere with its natural surroundings, it is a city with healthy environment, family-oriented attractions, comfortable accommodation facilities and highly-developed urban core. The population of Chilliwack is constantly growing due to advantageous living conditions and convenient location. The city stands at the gateway to the Fraser lowland. Originally the city community was a center of fur trade and the area of gold mines development tightly connected with Yale and Hope lands.
But the natural conditions of the region with its arable plains and developed transport network favoured the development of economic relations with Vancouver territories. Soon the Lower Mainland where Chilliwack is located became a part of Greater Vancouver region, and so was the city of Chilliwack. The incorporation of the territories started in 1873. And the first area joined was the Township of Chilliwack. In 1881 the subdivision was formed and got the name of Centerville. Soon, in 1887 the subdivision was renamed to Chilliwack that was more popular name among locals. In 1908 the area was established as a separate Chilliwack municipality with official status of the city. During 72 years the city of Chilliwack and the township of Chilliwack existed separately, only in 1980 the territories were merged into one single city of Chilliwack.
Chilliwack: The Name Origin Chilliwack people were the local Indian tribe, and the areas they inhabited also were called Chilliwack. Originally it spelled as Chilliwhack. This word had the meaning of travelling by quite backwater. From 10 000 years ago to 18th century the area of the Fraser River banks was inhabited by Sto:lo Indians. Their population was about 40 000 – 60 000 people, according to approximate estimations. The first contact with Europeans happened in 1782, and since then the local population was significantly reduced (only 5 – 10% left). The main reason of such extinction was the new diseases brought by Europeans. By 1857, when the first gold seekers came to British Columbia, there were very few aborigines to resist the upcoming changes. B 1858 there were about 30 000 miners in these lands, and they travelled mostly through Chilliwack.
Soon the gold seekers began to establish small villages, this was a necessary measure for providing the food products and other goods for their growing population. The newly created settlements were located near river landing stages, and the first such villages got the names of Chilliwack, Sumas and Miller’s. The Township of Chilliwack is one of the oldest municipalities of British Columbia founded in 1873. Originally the settlement occupied an area in Chilliwack Landing, near the Fraser River. It was the place where steamboats with passengers and various goods landed. Steamboats were the main transport that connected Chilliwack and Westminster. There was little area for community growth near the river, so its main commercial area soon was moved closer to the junction of main local roads: Young Road, Wellington Avenue and the New Westminster-Yale Wagon Road. In 1881 there was a new subdivision found, called Centerville. In 1887 it was renamed to Chilliwhack, which today is spelled as Chilliwack.
